Job Summary:
JMIR Publications is seeking qualified individuals to take on editorial responsibility as Editor-in-Chief for our journal, JMIR Serious Games. JMIR Serious Games is a multidisciplinary journal on gaming and gamification, including simulation, serious games, and virtual reality for health education/promotion, teaching, medicine, rehabilitation, and social change. While JMIR Serious Games maintains a strong focus on health, the journal also aims to highlight research exploring serious games in health-adjacent and other interdisciplinary contexts, including but not limited to military, education, industry, and workplace applications.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
The Editor-in-Chief will lead this well-respected journal toward the next level of excellence. In addition to upholding editorial strategy, publication quality, and research integrity, the candidate will also:
- Collaborates with the JMIR Publications team to set a clear and ambitious vision and priorities for the journal
- Recruits and sustains a diverse and highly skilled editorial board to shape, lead, and execute the journal’s vision
- Creates and implements a strategy to strengthen and grow the journal’s profile and impact
- Encourages and solicit the submission of original high‐quality manuscripts and theme issues from colleagues and leading researchers
- Oversee the identification, peer review, and editorial processing of journal content in close collaboration with the publisher
Education:
- PhD and/or MD and/or doctoral degree equivalent in the field of serious game design, computational media, behavioral or implementation science, digital health, medical informatics, or similar field
Experience:
- Active scientist or academic who is internationally recognized and has expertise in serious games or a related discipline
- Editorial experience as a journal editor, and/or deputy or associate editor in a biomedical journal with experience in the peer review process and communicating with authors, reviewers, and publishers
- Familiarity with reporting standards and ethical guidelines for publishing as well as awareness of the current new developments and changes in the publishing environment, such as preprints

- Science standard-bearer - Supports all facets of evaluating and disseminating high-quality research from leading authors in the field. Upholds high standards of scientific integrity and ethical conduct in all aspects of editorial work.
Compensation:
An honorarium will be commensurate with the journal and candidate’s experience.
