Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

Reporting to the Scientific Editorial Director (SED), the Manager will oversee scientific editorial operations and administration relating to the duties of members of journal of editorial boards and in-house scientific editorial staff. The Manager will apply expertise in publishing, science, and research integrity to shape the next stage of growth for JMIR Publications.


Key responsibilities include:



  • Manages the scientific editorial division, including overseeing budget, KPI’s, processes and deliverables.
  • Manage a skilled team of highly educated and professional Scientific Editors. Determine the appropriate level of resourcing, selecting the best team and facilitating staff in achieving their targets through professional development. 
  • Manages quality assurance functions and processes in support of editor decision-making, problem-solving specific issues or complaints when necessary.
  • Establishes, maintains, and enacts scientific editorial policies in collaboration with the Scientific Editorial Director. 
  • Collaborates with journal managers, staff, journal editors and editorial boards on handling publication ethics issues when needed.
  • Keep up-to-date with current publishing and competitor trends to advise on and improve JMIR publications’ scientific editorial practices.
  • Organizes and leads special projects involving scientific editorial processes.

Qualifications

Education: PhD and/or MD and/or doctoral degree equivalent, preferably in the field of medical informatics or digital health, or adjacent fields such as public health, health services research.


Experience:



  • Proven experience (at least 3-5 years) in scientific or medical journals publishing.
  • Expert in operations and administration relating to peer-review and scientific editorial workflows.
  • Strong team management and leadership experience, with a proven ability to mentor staff and build a positive, engaged team environment.
  • Familiarity with reporting standards, publishing ethics and research integrity standards, and human subjects research.
  • Experience working in open-access publishing environments is a plus.

  • Decision Quality: Able to gather, evaluate, and synthesize data to support data-driven decision-making, portfolio development, and policy updates.
  • Integrity and Trust: Operates transparently and is committed to maintaining the highest level of scientific and publication integrity.


Location: We prefer candidates located in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, but will consider candidates from North America and Europe.

Compensation

$115,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
