The Opportunity
JMIR Publications is seeking a qualified individual to serve as Editor-in-Chief for its newest journal, JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity. JMIR Publications is a trusted leader in ethical best practices for open science publishing, a reputation that forms the foundation for launching this new journal. This new journal responds to the increasing need among scientific communities for guidance and support in ethical practices, directly addressing these growing concerns and demands.
This new journal is designed to be a dedicated platform for critical discussions concerning ethical dilemmas, best practices, and issues of research and scientific integrity within modern scholarly and scientific publishing. The scope also includes metascience, or the "science of science," as technological advancements and increasing complexity in scholarly publishing ecosystems intersect with publishing policies and practices.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Working closely with JMIR Publications staff, a successful Editor-in-Chief candidate is an actively engaged member of the scientific and scholarly publishing community who will lead this innovative journal to establish it as a leading venue for metascience and research integrity scholarship. In addition to upholding editorial strategy, publication quality, and integrity, the candidate also:
- Collaborates with the JMIR Publications team to set a clear and ambitious vision and priorities for the journal, establish and grow the journal's profile and impact
- Leads a team of Associate Editors, working with journal staff to recruit and select members, sustaining a diverse and highly skilled editorial team
- Oversees the peer review and editorial processing of journal content, in close collaboration with the publisher’s journal staff and research integrity team
- Advocates for the journal as a champion, encouraging and soliciting the submission of original high-quality scholarly work from leading researchers in research ethics, publication ethics, metascience, and the responsible conduct of science
- Publishes editorials commenting on significant trends and developments within the scope of the journal
Education
- PhD and/or MD and/or doctoral degree equivalent in a relevant discipline, such as research ethics, bioethics, health sciences, medical informatics, information science, or a related field
Experience
- Active researcher, academic, or scholarly publishing professional who is internationally recognized and has expertise in research integrity, publication ethics, metascience, or a related discipline
- History of publishing with journals and scholarly publications in their field(s) of expertise
- Editorial experience as a journal editor, and/or deputy or associate editor in a peer-reviewed journal, with experience in the peer review process and communicating with authors, reviewers, and publishers
- Experience reviewing manuscripts for quality, methodological accuracy, relevance, contribution, and potential impact
- Thought leader who can drive strategy and innovation in publishing, and is able to foster a community of authors, editors, and reviewers
- Possesses in-depth knowledge of publication ethics guidelines (such as COPE, ICMJE, and WAME) and reporting standards. Stays current with new developments, changes, and emerging topics, such as artificial intelligence in research and publishing, open peer review, preprints, and new publishing models

Compensation
Compensation will be commensurate with the journal and candidate's experience.
