Summary
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and New Business, the Scientific News Editor will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between scientific research and the public.  This newly created position will be responsible for transforming complex scientific content into accessible and engaging formats, expanding the reach and impact of JMIR's research beyond the academic community.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in science journalism, a keen interest in digital health and technology, and a deep understanding of the open science movement.

Key Responsibilities:

Content Development / Identify and Commission News & Views Articles::
  • Develop consumer-friendly summaries and abstracts of scientific articles.
  • Explore the use of AI for generating layperson abstracts.
  • Collaborate on the creation of podcasts based on research content.
  • Source and commission high-quality News & Views articles from leading experts in the field of digital health and technology.
  • Develop and maintain a network of potential authors and contributors.
Edit and Shape Content:
  • Develop and Implement Editorial Strategy:
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a comprehensive editorial strategy
Public Relations:
  • Engage journalists and media outlets to promote research findings.
  • Manage the distribution of press releases through newswire services.
Original Content Creation:
  • Contribute to the development of original articles and other content formats.
Webinar and Social Media Engagement:
  • Assist in the planning and execution of webinar series on industry trends.
  • Develop and implement social media strategies to disseminate research findings.
Collaborate with the Editorial Team:
  • Work closely with other editors and staff to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to discussions on strategic initiatives.
  • Provide support and guidance to other team members as needed.
News & Views Content:
  • Identify emerging trends and topics of interest to our readership.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to expand the reach and impact of News & Views articles.
  • Explore the creation of "best of" lists, research ratings, and other innovative content formats.
  • Stay informed about current trends in science communication and digital media.
  • Leveraging user generated content

Qualifications:

Education
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., science, technology, journalism)

Experience
  • Strong understanding of scientific principles and research methodologies.
  • Deep understanding of digital health, technology, and open science
  • Experience in science communication, journalism, or a related field.
  • Ideally past experience hosting and producing webinars
  • Proven ability to create and commission high-quality content

Technical Skills
  • Familiarity with digital media platforms, website CMS, and content creation tools.
  • Experience with editorial software and systems
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • A passion for disseminating scientific knowledge and promoting open access
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear and concise language.
